Tohoku international school
TIS is the largest international school in Tohoku region and is located in the Sendai suburbs. There are about 125 students currently with the student body growing fast as more international families discover Tohoku. Enrollment fees are about half of what you would pay in Tokyo. The teachers and staff are top notch and create an environment that is inclusive, safe and a great place to learn. TIS is part of the International Baccalaureate Program and has a fantastic music and arts program. The student body is composed of a diverse group of children from approximately thirty countries. Public school is certainly an option in Sendai but you are limited to just three schools with paid support staff for international students. The International Center in Sendai has produced a good pamphlet to explain what you and your child can anticipate if you choose to enroll at a Japanese public school.
According to Japanese law education for foreign children is not compulsory. This means there would be no laws or restrictions over foreign parents home schooling their children.
